Charlotte Smith

Charlotte Smith was born into a wealthy family and she received extension education as a child. Her boarding school taught her to write Sonnets which later turned out to be beneficial for her while writing Elegiac Sonnets. The Ups and downs in Smith’s life is very captivating to read and to see how much of that influenced her poetry. She has been in a child marriage, her father betrayed her, her husband left her, and she had the burden of handling her family’s financial debt. The sonnets reflect the melancholy in her life, how pessimism could engulf her from all the struggles. Her poem “Beachy Head” was different from her sonnets; her narrative structure had a consciousness. The poem was written in blank verse. As a women in the men dominated socio, economic, culture structure she takes active part in the age of Romanticism.
