Notes on The English Romantic Poets

English Romantic Poets

  1. Nature vs. Art:
    1. Artificial is natural for humans = favoring of art
    2. nature is superior because it is nature and unattainable; things created by men are imperfect and are open to criticism (French Revolution); nature replaces faith, nature as temple, nature as god
  2. Influence of Christianity
    1. Dual nature of man (original sin, knowledge of right and wrong) – conflicting desire to be good and desire to disobey
    2. Ideal of endless progress – human agency is unable to achieve an end/bliss because their nature is always at war, no art is perfect, not satisfaction, something else will come along and be stronger or better than the last
  3. Break away from the classics – local folklore favored over classic myth, original work instead of copies
