I stumbled upon this interview on YouTube. It made me think of Robert Burns, partly because of the name similarities and partly due to the content. The interviewer talks about John Byrne’s plays as establishing a kind of Scottish identity, just as Robert Burns established a written Scottish dialect.
It can be helpful just to listen to this interview. The thickness of John Byrne’s accent can get a Scottish voice into your head that might not naturally come to you when reading Burns’ poetry.
